Gary M. Nylund Sr., 87, of Portsmouth, passed away peacefully and with family by his side on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at SOMC Hospice. He was born July 1, 1935 in Portsmouth, to the late Oscar and Josephine (Boutin) Nylund Pilson. Gary was a United States Veteran of the Navy, and retired from the city of Portsmouth, in the Water Works department. Gary was a proud member of James Dickey Post #23, American Legion, having volunteered many hours, including working the Honor Guard for funerals, was a member of American Legion’s 40/8, and loved playing organized softball for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight siblings, sister-in-law, Ruth Tackett, and brother-in-law, Roy Payton.
Gary is survived by his wife, Gayle (Tackett) Nylund, his three sons, Gary M. Nylund Jr. of Portsmouth, Stephen W. Nylund of New Boston, and Keith E. Nylund (Stacy) of Portsmouth, a daughter, Roberta Nylund of Portsmouth, eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his wife’s siblings, Gerald Tackett (Vivian) of Columbus, Jack Tackett (Debbie) of Portsmouth, Wanda Payton of Portsmouth, and Larry Edwards of Portsmouth.
A Celebration of Life will on Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Military graveside burial rites will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery and be provided by the American Legion, James Dickey Post #23
