Helen Louise Damron, 92, of Portsmouth, died Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Hill View Retirement Center. She was born July 12, 1928 in Portsmouth, to the late Mose and Mary (Morrison) Damron.
“Nana” as she was known to family started small at the Schaefer Super Market in Portsmouth as a teenager but later would become a world traveler, a small business owner, and dabbled in real estate before coming back to Portsmouth in her later years. She would then volunteer at the hospital, and donate time to help the cloistered nuns at a convent here in Portsmouth. She was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Portsmouth.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her children; Daniel Patrick Cassidy and Nancy Ellen Malec, as well as her brother, Charles Edward Damron.
Helen is survived by three grandchildren; Joshua Malec, of Charleston, S.C., James Malec, of Grove City, Jared Malec, of Williamsburg, VA., and three great-grandchildren Cass, Jared and Teddy.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Monday, July 19, 2021 at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. David Glockner officiating. Burial will be at Old Wheelersburg Cemetery at a later date.
A visitation for friends and family will be on Monday, one hour before the service at the funeral home.
