James Daniel Slade, 68, of Portsmouth, died Thursday, June 17, 2021 at SOMC in Portsmouth. He was born May 9, 1953 in Poplarville, Mississippi to the late James L. and Bernice (Merritt) Slade. He was a self-employed home remodeler and handy-man. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, a former Pentecostal preacher, and was a musician and played guitar.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Darrell.
James is survived by his wife, Carol Ann (Wilson) Slade, three sons; James Daniel Slade Jr., Joseph Slade, and Thomas Slade all of Portsmouth, a daughter, Rebecca Ann Powell of Dallas, Georgia, four grandchildren; Kayla, Shamia, Kamara, and Ashlynn, and seven sisters; Donna, Annette, Jewel, Cindy, Janice, Nadine, and Mary. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family and are under the direction of Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
