John Edward Malone 1930 – 2023
The sons and daughters of John Edward Malone, 93, of Portsmouth, sorrowfully announce his passing on Wednesday, November 15, 2023 surrounded by his family. He passed peacefully under the incredible care of Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) Hospice.
Born May 22, 1930, John was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Anne (Coyle) in 2011, a son, John Francis, and his parents, Earl and Ethel (Bayless) Malone. Also preceding him in death were sisters, Marjorie Porginski and Sister Agnes Malone, and brothers, Charles and James. He is survived by a sister Alberta (Tom) Surendonk of Wisconsin, sister-in-law Sharon McGowan of Pennsylvania and many nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his children, Phillip of Portsmouth, Gregory (Sharon) of Lucasville, Deanne (John) Henry of Waynesville, David (Jacqui) of Portsmouth, Mark (Kay) of Sciotoville, Mary (Ed) Anderson of Lucasville and Daniel (Beth) of McDermott. John has fifteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Toby.
John was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. He graduated in 1947 from (St. Mary’s High School) Central Catholic. He was a United States Army Veteran and founding member of The Catholic Adults for Youth (CAY). John and his father operated Malone’s Garage in Portsmouth, Ohio. He was later an employee of Glockner Chevrolet and Ohio Power. He was a member of the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church choir and Portsmouth Male choir.
The family requests any memorial donations be made to SOMC Hospice or the CAY scholarship fund through the Scioto Area Foundation.
Visitation will be Friday, November 17th at the Melcher-Hammer Funeral Home from 5-7:00 pm. Recitation of the Rosary will follow. The Rite of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, November 18th at 10:00 am at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Ohio. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
