John Stevenson Reid

John Stevenson Reid, 72, of Portsmouth, died Saturday, January 25, 2025 at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth. He was born April 6, 1952 in Portsmouth, to the late John D. Reid and Magaline Thomas. John was a Veteran of the United States Navy, was a union Laborer, and worked for the railroad. John was an avid fisherman and loved being on the water, whether by jet ski or boat. He was a great dancer and enjoyed watching all sports, especially boxing and football.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Reid.

John is survived by his daughter, Sequoia M. Johnson of Portsmouth, two grandchildren, Savion Taylor and De’von Jones Jr., two great-grandchildren, Kyndri Taylor and A’vonna Jones, and three bonus great-grandchildren, Legend Willis, Marvel Willis, and Maddox Willis.

Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Saturday, February 1, 2025 at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth, with Pastor Marcus Bendolph officiating. A visitation for friends and family will be on Saturday from 2:00 PM until the start of service at 4:00 PM. Military honors will be provided by American legion, James Dickey Post #23 starting at 4:00 PM.
