Mary Ann Wakefield Obituary

It is with great sadness that we share Mary Ann Catherine (Duplain) Wakefield, 76, passed away Thursday, December 10th, 2020 at home surrounded by her family.  As a lifelong resident of Scioto County, she was born and raised in Portsmouth, OH before moving to Wheelersburg in 1970 with her husband of 44 years, Charles B. Wakefield, where she resided until 2019.

Mary Ann attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1962. Called to the nursing profession at a young age, she supported herself through St. Francis School of Nursing, graduating in 1965. She later earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Ohio University. She was a well-respected nurse with extensive training, expertise and regarded highly by her colleagues and patients. She worked for Dr. Gaspich, Mercy Hospital, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, and Southern Ohio Medical Center. She retired in 2012 with over 40 years of nursing service and continued to serve her community working as a school nurse for the Wheelersburg School District and teaching nursing courses for Scioto County Career Technical Center.

Mary Ann was a devout Catholic and faithful steward of her church, St. Peter In Chains in Wheelersburg, where she enjoyed serving as reader, greeter, eucharist minister or collector. She was an active member of the Minford Garden Club and took great pride tending to her rose garden and landscaping. She enjoyed traveling, designing and decorating homes, and social gatherings with friends. She loved spending time with her family and her greatest joy was being a grandma and great grandma to her 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Alma (Petry) Duplain and her husband Charlie. She is survived by daughter Michele Wakefield (Chris Jones) of Richmond, KY, daughter Julie Kennedy of Columbus, son Brent (Becky) Wakefield of Omaha, NE, daughter Erin (Greg) Stevens of Columbus and grandchildren and great grandchildren - Whitnie (Seth), Kayson, and Sophie Tackett, Allison and Bryson Keeney, Jack and Nathan Kennedy, Olivia and Emma Wakefield, and Samuel Stevens.
