Robert "Snuffy" G. Smith

Robert G. (Snuffy) Smith, age 78 passed away January 11, 2021 at SOMC Hospice. He was a graduate of East High School in Youngstown, Oh 1960. He served 9 years in the United States Marine Corps, leaving as a Staff Sargent. Robert “Snuffy” returned to college at age 33 and received an associate degree in Construction Management, and Civil Engineering from Columbus Technical Institute. Robert “Snuffy” worked for Edward Suzannie Construction, Columbia, OH, A.E. Stilson and Associates, Dalton and Dalton Engineers, and URS Engineering all of Ohio. He oversaw many city utility projects, including Domestic water supply, waste water treatment facilities in and around the Portsmouth area. 

Robert “Snuffy” was an AA member with 24 years of sobriety! He sponsored many people to overcome addiction!  

Snuffy leaves behind his wife of 23 years Sarah Foley Smith of Portsmouth OH.

He also leaves children Robert Jr, Delbert II, Kelley Lester, Kathy Thomas and stepson Rance Bauer. He also leaves 15 grandchildren, and 29 great grandchildren. He also leaves siblings Carol Torres, his twin Richard Smith, Alice Bott, and Lee Smith.

Proceeded in death by parents Delbert and Mary Smith, and sister Georgette Moffo.

Snuffy will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Memorial services will be 3:00 PM Sunday, January 17, 2021 at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Jay Hash officiating. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion, James Dickey Post #23. 

A visitation for friends and family will be on Sunday, from 2:00 P.M until time of service.
