Roger McCoy III Obituary

Roger Harold McCoy III, 40, of Portsmouth, died on Friday, March 24, 2023, after losing his battle with addiction. Roger was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on February 21, 1983 He grew up in McDermott, OH. Roger is survived by his daughters Adrianna and Elexis McCoy, son Trenton McCoy, step son Nathan McCoy, mother, Trena (Charles) Culp, sister Molly (Josh) Meeker, brother Shane McCoy, sister Sonya Duke, sister Mariah (Anthony) Murphy and girlfriend Robin Lawson. He is also survived by his grandparents, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends. Roger was proceeded in death by his father (Roger McCoy II), and his mother (Sandra Crace) and infant brother Nicholas McCoy.

Roger had a heart of gold; anyone from his childhood or adult life could confirm. He was kind, funny, selfless, loyal, and always tried to find the positive in any situation. In turn, doing his best to block out the negatives, which is where his addiction came into play. His addiction offered Roger an escape from his demons he faced throughout his life. His family would like to speak the truth about his death. Silence would mean Roger’s death was in vain, but if one person's life is saved by his story, we would tell it a million more times. We know the pain of his suffering. We know the pain of our own suffering as his family, and we know there are hundreds of other people here in our community suffering as addicts or as loved ones to them. Speaking the truth, no matter the circumstances, surrounding the epidemic of addiction may be the difference between life and death for someone. In honor of Roger’s life, we ask that truth be spread in regard to this epidemic and awareness of addiction be raised.
