Shirley Joan Maxie, 85, of Beaufort, SC, formerly of Westerville, OH, passed away on August 1, 2021. Shirley was a proud mother and grandmother; her family was her primary focus in life. She was a talented homemaker and decorator, known for her hospitality to family and friends. She was very thoughtful to send a card or make a phone call of encouragement to all she knew and loved. Shirley was a former Sunday school teacher, choir member, Cub Scout Den Mother, and PTA volunteer. Shirley was a faithful donor to D.A.V., Cancer Society, and St. Jude’s. She enjoyed crafting and refurbishing furniture. She was a loyal Ohio State Buckeye Football fan.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her mother, Thelma Riffe Walker and her father, Jonah Kimbler, beloved husband of 50 years, Carlos Maxie, a son, Terry Maxie, a granddaughter, Christina Maxie, brother, Ray Kimbler, and an infant sister, Ada Kimbler. She is survived by siblings; Timothy, Terry, Sharon, and Kim Kimbler. She is also survived by daughters; Carla (Austin) Stout, Tamyla (John) Powell, and son, Christopher (Kimberly) Maxie. Her legacy includes fifteen grandchildren; Amber Turnage, Emily LaSalle, Jeremy, Joshua, Justin, and Brandan Maxie, Brittany Mayo, Darion, Carly, and Matthew Powell, Christopher Jr., Chandler, Carlos, Lydia, and Carla Maxie. Shirley was also very proud to have thirty- seven great- grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, August 6, 2021 at Melcher Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Ray LaSalle officiating, burial will follow at Memorial Burial Park in Wheelersburg. A visitation for family and friends will begin one hour prior to the service.
The family requests the wearing of masks for the protection of high risk individuals.
