Obituary

Zelma A. Starrett, 83 of Portsmouth passed away Monday, May 22, 2023 at SOMC Hospice. Zelma was born August 31, 1939 in Ashland, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Enoch and Clara Major Collier. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Neil "Danny" Starrett; a sister, Joann Wright, and a brother, Donald Collier. She formerly worked at Williams Manufacturing, Kenricks, and Jim Dandy Restaurant. She was active as a volunteer at Vern Riffe School, and enjoyed her family and loved being with them.

Surviving are her daughters, Carol (Rodney) Schisler of Portsmouth, Alice (Sam) Herles of Wheelersburg; her grandson, Neil Herles; one brother, Enoch “Bud” Collier of Lorain, OH; one sister, Nancy Abbott of Cincinnati, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2023 at Melcher-Hammer Funeral Home with Pastors Jared Timberlake and Dennis Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at Melcher-Hammer Funeral Home in Portsmouth from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday and from Noon to 1:00 p.m. Friday prior to the service.
